Answer question 2 and 3 on the handout. Specifically, find research on Pope Innocent the II and why he banned the crosbow. Be creative and find good information to post. What do you think the crossbow did for military tactics?

2. The crossbow was good because it could inflict terrible wounds. It could be used by untrained soldiers unlike the longbow, which would take years of training. The firing rate of the crossbow was 1 to 3 longbow shots. The crossbow could be fired accurately at 150 yards and could still injure an enemy or horse at 300 yards. The crossbow could be carried around loaded.
ReplyDelete3. In 1139, Pope Innocent II banned the crossbow because he believed it was too deadly. Later article 51 of the magna carta even banned it. Even though it was banned the crossbow remained a popular weapon until the end of the 15th century.

The drawbacks of medieval crossbows include the heaviness of the weapon, requiring multiple infantry men to operate the weapon, and the slow rate of fire made the infantry men succeptable to attacks. Pope Innocent II banned the crossbow because of it violent nature and his belief that crossbowmen were a deadly art and hated by God.

ReplyDelete2. The weakness of the crossbow is that it has a slow rate of fire. The weight of the crossbow was also a disadvantage, with it weighing 6-8 pounds. The longbow also had its disadvantages, a person can not shoot very effectively without training. The bow was also less effective at shooting compared to the crossbow.
3. Pope Innocent II banned the crossbow because he thought it was too deadly.
The crossbow took a longer time to load compared to the traditional long bow, because the bigger the crossbow is, the more difficult it is to reset the catch. Although they are difficult to reload, they can seriously injure an enemy soldier up to 300 yards away.

Crossbows were banned by Pope innocent II because if their being extremely heavy. Also, He and the Churcn of the Lateran Council set up said bans because crossbows were said to be hated by God and it was referred to as a "deadly art".
