3rd Post --Feudalism

Discuss the hierarchy of the feudal system, do you think the serfs played an important role? Find an example in history on the website (not about.com or wikispaces.com). Why do you think Feudalism died out?

Write 5-6 sentences and post a small exerpt on the topic above.

  1. The feudalism system had four branches as shown above. The king/queen was at the top followed by nobles, then vassals and knights and peasants and serfs were the lowest. The serfs got to live on the land because they worked for the owner. I think that the serfs worked very hard and they deserved to be able to stay. I also think that the serfs did a lot right and benefited their employers very well. Without the serfs and all of their hard work, the manors would not have been quite what they were.

  2. Feudalism was based on a rather lopsided arrangement, one that was supposed to benefit all involved, but rarely did. The kings and queens were, as shown in the diagram, at the top of the system. In exchange for service, nobles, vassals, and knights were given land and power. Of course, the foundation of this system were peasants and serfs who worked the land in exchange for "protection". While they were protected from foreign invaders to a certain extent, no one protected them from the abuses of the knights and nobles. They were the very base of the system, as the provided the taxes to finance the military and produced the food.
Interestingly enough, the plague helped bring about a change in the system. So many people had died that the remaining peasants had become valuable, as, suddenly, there was not an endless supply of people who were slaves in all but name. This, alongside peasant revolts and a dramatically changing world, led to the eventual end of the feudal system, giving way to new governmental and economic structures, which eventually led to modern Western democracy and capitalism.

  3. The feudal system was the idea of a people being organized into groups. These groups were usually determined by their occupation. The feudal pyramid has been balanced out by other government groups, so that one person doesn't have the power, as the Kings and Queens did back then. Serfs have always been the backbone of society. They are the laborers and the gatherers of civilization, they have always worked for money. Even though they are not called serfs now, they still have the same concept, the working class.

  4. The feudal system, like many others, was based on power and wealth. This system was very efficient and was well balanced. the four groups that made up this system were starting from the top: Kings and Queens- who held the most power, then Nobles- who were made up of Lords and ladies, Vassals and Knights followed, and last were peasant- farmer and servant, and Serf- who were stuck to the land they were born on. Each group would go to the group above it or higher in power and better of for help. Normally what was given was land in exchange for work or safety. Serfs, played an important role in the system because unlike slaves they weren't owned by people but by the land and couldn't be sold or bought.

  5. The feudal system was a social order based on four classes. At the highest level were the kings, next came the highest vassals, below them came the knights, and finally at the bottom were the peasants. A persons status in this system was based on power and prestige. Serfs were considered peasants of the society. I believe the peasants held a major factor though in society. Serfs were people bound to the land they were born, but were not considered slave. Without the serfs doing the many chores like farming the crops and and taking care of the housing higher class people would be lost. They indeed were a main part in the feudalism society.

  6. The feudal system was set up by four social classes. The highest level was the kings and queen. Below them came the knights, which were hired by feudal lords for protection, and guard, in exchange for land and any services and necessities that were required. Eventually lords raised private armies made up of knights. At the bottom were the peasants. They lived a harsh life. They recieved little or no pay, and enough food to survive. They could not leave because they had no better job to go back to. A persons status in this system was based on power, wealth, prestige, and inherited land. Serfs were considered peasants of the society. They were secretly the framework holding the society together. Without them, all chores and work could not be done. However, they were still looked down on.

  8. The feudal system was made up of four social classes. First was the king he ruled everything and one. THen the nobles came. Then knihgts and last serfs. the serfs had an important role they created all the food and to have an upper class there has to be a lower class so the serfs were very important. Also i think feudalism died out becuase the lower classes got tired of obeying their rulers and finally learned how to think and act for themselves.

  9. Feudalism is a political system of power dispersed and balanced between king and nobles. This is a weak system and it refers to a general set of reciprocal legal and military obligations among the warrior nobility of Europe during the Middle Ages, revolving around the three key concepts of lords, vassals, and fiefs.
The serfs played an important role because they worked and farmed the land, only to recieve little pay and to give most of what they produced to the noblemen who owned the estates. Feudalism probably died out because of rebellions by the serfs, new rules set by the Church.

    1. In the feudal system, one's social status determines much of their everyday life. The highest status were nobles and knights, followed by men and women of the church, and then there were the peasants. The feudal system was based on rights and obligations. Lords would grant land to vassals in exchange for protection.

  10. The Feudal System was introduced to England following the invasion and conquest of the country by William I (The Conqueror).
The system had been used in France by the Normans from the time they first settled there in about 900AD. It was a simple, but effective system, where all land was owned by the King. One quarter was kept by the King as his personal property, some was given to the church and the rest was leased out under strict controls. The sirfs played an important role because the controlled the farming, even though they were considered peasants
